Down the Rabbit Hole

illustration 2023 Self-initiated

A two-scene picture book spread developed in 2024, exploring sequential storytelling within a single illustration — following a girl from the edge of a forest into a glowing crystal cave.

Overview

A self-initiated illustration project developed in 2024 to explore picture book storytelling. The two pieces function as a sequential spread: the first shows the girl discovering a rabbit hole at the forest's edge and climbing down; the second places her inside a luminous crystal cave. The project was built to demonstrate narrative illustration, character consistency across scenes, and environmental contrast.

The visual language was built around the tension between a clean character and a painterly world.

The character is rendered with clear, graphic linework:  readable and expressive against any background — while the environments are built up in loose digital watercolor with layered colour overlays, creating depth and atmosphere through texture rather than line.

The contrast between the two keeps the character visually anchored even as the world around her shifts from dense forest to glowing underground cave.

The sequence-within-a-page format, showing the same character at multiple moments in a single composition, gives the spread a storybook rhythm without needing text to carry the narrative.

From story beat to finished spread.

Each scene was developed digitally, combining clean character illustration with layered watercolor textures and colour overlays to build the environmental atmosphere.
