the Little Vampire - Animated Series Concept

CHARACTER DESIGN & CONCEPT ART 2019 ACADEMIC

A full visual development project for a fictional animated adaptation of Angela Sommer-Bodenburg's The Little Vampire (Der kleine Vampir) — including character design, world-building, background art, logo, and art book design.

Overview

Developed as a post-graduation final project in 2019, this work proposes a Brazilian animated series adaptation of The Little Vampire, a beloved German children's book series translated into over 30 languages.

The deliverable took the form of an art book — in the tradition of "The Art Of" publications — documenting the complete visual development of the series: characters, environments, color keys, typography, and graphic design.

The visual language was built around the contrast between the human world and the vampire world.

Character design was the central discipline. Each character was developed with a distinct silhouette, personality-driven costume, and expressive range — from Anton, the antisocial human protagonist whose guava-red jacket keeps him visually anchored in every scene, to Rudi's theatrical posture and shifting fangs, and Ana's rounded teeth that soften her vampire nature. Anton's palette was deliberately designed to stand out against both the dark, purple-and-teal nocturnal environments of the vampire world and the muted, autumnal tones of the daytime human world — so that when he dons the borrowed cape, his shift into the vampire world reads visually without a word of dialogue.

Environments were developed with the same narrative intentionality: the Bohnsack apartment floorplan was drawn from the books, with Anton's room positioned so Rudi can enter through a window facing a blank wall rather than the street. The crypt interior draws on the cross-shaped floor plan of Byzantine church architecture, furnished with Victorian-era objects. The cemetery was designed around a specific pine tree — imposing but inconspicuous — beneath which the crypt entrance is hidden.

From story research to finished art book.

The project began with deep research into the source material and visual references — including animated series such as Hilda, Steven Universe, and Adventure Time — before moving into character sketching, colour key development, background painting, logo design, and the layout and graphic design of the complete art book.
