Growing up, The adventures of the Little Vampire was a big influence. Maybe that’s where the macabre universe started to flourish in me!
Concept art and character design for post graduation project based on the book series The Adventures of the Little Vampire by Angela Sommer-Boddenburg.
The project needed to be presented as a product, so I opted to make it a fictional “the Art of ” kind of book, as if the TV series were already made.
Anton is an introspective kid. He is passionate about the universe of horror fictions. He watches horror movies and read a lot of books.
Rudiger is a vampire who was transformed when he was a kid. To create a TV animated series adaptation, I opted to change his name to Rudi. He is temperamental and arrogant. As with all vampires of this universe descriptions, I wanted to keep the characteristic of messy hair and dark circles under his eyes.
Ana is Rudi’s younger sister and Anton’s girlfriend. She is sweet and kind. Her hair is also messy. She also tries very badly not to turn into a real vampire. I love the idea of their ears moving up and down to express their feelings visually.
Aunt Dorothea is a scary cruel vampire. This design is actually unfinished. And I wish to be able to complete her design someday.
She is supposed to have a very victorian look to her clothes, with a cape that resembles a moth wing.
The capes of the characters is what gives them the hability to fly. That being said, the colors of Anton’s clothes are shiny and bright because he does not belong to the vampire world. So his colors and his presence is supposed to stand out from the rest of the group.
But when Rudi lends him the cape, he can blend in and hide more easily.
Anton lives in an apartment with his parents. Rudi always visits him at Anton’s room window which is located at the back of the building. So when he flies at night, all the neighboors can see is some kind of giant shadow, resembling a bat, floating around, and dismiss it as a moth distorted by perspective.
The vampire’s crypt is located inside an abandoned part of an old cemetery, with crooked and old tombstones. The entrance a square big rock, located under a pine tree.
Rudi and Ana read horror books they borrow from Anton. Because of the secret (they are not supposed to have contact with humans), I wanted to give them Box Beds or Closed Beds. Since their family live together inside the crypt, every one of them can close the curtains for privacy. Old furniture and props inspired by victorian era.
